Maaike den Dunnen - Arrival

Here’s a great jazz singer, born in but too big for the Netherlands!
- Fay Claassen – internationally acclaimed and awarded jazz singer, Cologne –
December 2012

I truly believe that Maaike den Dunnen will be the next important new vocalist.
- Michael Abene – Grammy winning arranger/producer and chefdirigent of the WDR Big Band of Cologne, Germany – December 2012

A rare young talent on today's jazz scene! This recording is only the beginning of something BIG!!
- Dena DeRose – internationally acclaimed and awarded jazz singer-pianist, NYC – December 2012

Even before releasing her debut album, Dutch jazz-singer/-composer Maaike den Dunnen gained acknowledgement on an international level. She was mentioned twice in ‚Downbeat Magazine’, receiving the title ‚Outstanding Performance’ (USA, 2011).  She performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival (NL), as a finalist in the European Jazz Competition 2011. In 2009, she represented the Netherlands in the European Jazz Orchestra 2009 (EU).
With ‘Arrival’, Den Dunnen presents her official debut. With an all-star line-up featuring some of the highlights on the European/world-wide jazz scene (read below), she performs her own compositions and arrangements. Fresh music that respects the traditional jazz- (and pop-) repertoire, while also allowing its originality to shine strongly. While listening to ‘Arrival’ you’ll be surprised by a 90's “house-hit”, a megaphone, or a jazz arrangement made out of a Billy Joel cover…Den Dunnen’s vast appeal by both jazz fans and general music-lovers comes from the fact that she incorporates a high musical intelligence and integrity, while making the music accessible through lyricism, humor, and an incredibly infectious energy.

Thomas Kugi – Austria (saxophones) is one of the most sought-after saxophonists on the Austrian music-scene. Playing different styles with ease, his collaborations include The New York Voices, Adam Holzman, Gloria Gaynor and Chaka Khan.

Renato Chicco – Italy/Slovenia (piano) played with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra (1990-1991) and was the pianist and musical director for Jon Hendricks & Company (1991-1997). He worked with Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, Clark Terry and many others.

Milan Nikolic - Serbia (double bass), currently is one of the bassplayers most in demand around Eastern Europe. He worked with a.o. Karl Ratzer, Walt Weiskopf and Ferdinand Povel.

Mario Gonzi - Austria (drums) played in the European Art Farmer Quintet for 14 years. From 1999 to 2008, he was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra. He worked with Bob Brookmeyer, Johnny Griffin, Benny Golson, Cedar Walton and many more.
